Launching Ceremony
A National Platform for Mathematical Talent
COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI) has launched the COMSATS National Mathematics Olympiad (CNMO), a national initiative aimed at identifying talented students from across Pakistan, nurturing their mathematical abilities, and promoting excellence in mathematics education.
The launching ceremony was held at COMSATS University Islamabad, Lahore Campus, with Prof. Dr. Nasir Mahmood, Vice Chancellor, Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU), attending as the Chief Guest. Prof. Dr. Qaisar Abbas, Director, CUI Lahore Campus, along with academicians, faculty members and other participants, attended the ceremony.
The COMSATS National Mathematics Olympiad has been initiated under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Raheel Qamar, Rector, COMSATS University Islamabad, and the supervision of Prof. Dr. Qaisar Abbas, Director, CUI Lahore Campus. The initiative seeks to promote mathematics education at the national level and provide a platform for students with exceptional mathematical potential from different parts of the country.
Introducing the theme and academic vision of CNMO, Prof. Dr. Sarfraz Ahmad highlighted the importance of developing mathematical thinking, curiosity, creativity and problem‑solving abilities among students. Prof. Dr. Kashif Ali, Head of the Department of Mathematics, CUI Lahore Campus, elaborated on the academic objectives and framework of the Olympiad.
Addressing the ceremony, Chief Guest Prof. Dr. Nasir Mahmood highlighted the immense talent and potential of Pakistan’s young people and stressed the need to provide talented students with meaningful opportunities, platforms and supportive environments to develop their abilities.
He noted that Pakistani youth have demonstrated their capabilities at national and international levels, adding that initiatives such as CNMO could play an important role in identifying and encouraging mathematical talent from an early stage. He also emphasised the importance of mathematical skills, scientific thinking and problem‑solving abilities for the country’s future academic and scientific development.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Dr. Qaisar Abbas said CUI Lahore Campus was committed to strengthening its contribution to the national education sector by creating opportunities for young students to develop and demonstrate their academic and intellectual potential. He also expressed his commitment to exploring international scholarships and exchange programmes in mathematics to provide students with greater opportunities for global academic exposure and advancement.
The ceremony featured key addresses on the vision and objectives of CNMO, the future direction of CUI Lahore Campus, and the pivotal role of the Department of Mathematics in advancing mathematical education. The event concluded with remarks by the Chief Guest, followed by a ceremonial cake‑cutting.
