The Department
Welcome to the Department of Mathematics at CUI Lahore
Established in 2005, the Department of Mathematics at COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI), Lahore Campus, stands as a premier hub for mathematical education and research in Pakistan. Guided by a bold vision to cultivate elite analytical minds, the department initially focused on providing robust mathematical foundations to allied scientific fields. Recognizing the growing global demand for high-tier researchers and quantitative problem solvers, the department rapidly scaled up its academic horizon. It successfully launched its specialized Master of Science (MS) in Mathematics in 2008, followed by a rigorous PhD program in 2010, and a comprehensive Bachelor of Science (BS) in Mathematics in 2013. Today, it proudly ranks among the top institutions nationwide, securing an impressive global ranking of 251-300 by QS World University Rankings.
Academic Excellence and Strong Faculty Support
The backbone of this thriving academic ecosystem is its elite faculty. The department boasts a highly qualified team of 33 permanent, HEC-approved PhD faculty members—marking it as the largest and most robust mathematical department in the surrounding region. Through their dedicated guidance, CUI Lahore has produced a stellar alumni network consisting of:
- 1500+ accomplished BS graduates
- 1000+ skilled MS specialists
- 70+ pioneering PhD researchers
Global Collaborations and Research Footprint
Driven by a passion to keep pace with international breakthroughs, the department actively bridges the gap between local talent and global mathematics communities. It regularly collaborates with elite institutions, such as the Mathematics section of the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Italy. Through unique joint training initiatives, world-renowned visiting professors from the UK, Germany, France, Italy, and Russia regularly visit the campus to co-supervise and teach graduate students. Furthermore, the department frequently organizes high-profile events funded by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) and prestigious international agencies. Notable events include the Centre International de Mathématiques Pures et Appliquées (CIMPA) Research Schools, the International Conference on Recent Advances in Applied Mathematics (ICRAAM), and prestigious mathematical Olympiads.
Bridging Theory and Real-World Application
At CUI Lahore, learning goes far beyond traditional textbooks. The department places heavy emphasis on practical, industry-ready expertise by integrating modern computational tools into its curriculum. Through specialized hands-on workshops and seminars, students actively master essential programming languages and software, including MATLAB, Python, and R. These intensive sessions are specifically tailored to bridge the gap between abstract mathematics and data-driven industries.
