The thesis presents a comprehensive investigation of the outer multiset dimension of graphs associated with finite commutative rings. The research establishes connections between algebraic structures and graph-theoretic distance parameters, with particular emphasis on the zero-divisor graph, compressed zero-divisor graph, and extended zero-divisor graph. The study determines outer multiset dimensions for several important families of finite commutative rings, including rings of integers modulo (n), Gaussian integers modulo (n), Boolean rings, and local rings.

The research further develops explicit formulas, bounds, examples, and computational results, while exploring the relationships between ring-theoretic properties such as nilpotency, idempotence, and reducibility and distance-based graph invariants. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the interaction between algebraic and combinatorial structures and open avenues for further research in multiset-based graph dimensions.

Her success further strengthens the Department's commitment to excellence in advanced mathematical research and doctoral education. The Department extends its best wishes to Dr. Amina Riaz for a successful and productive academic and research career ahead.

81st PhD Graduate Milestone

Department Celebrates Successful PhD Final Defense of Mr. Rauf Irshad

The Department of Mathematics, COMSATS University Islamabad, Lahore Campus, proudly announces the successful PhD Final Defense of Mr. Rauf Irshad (Registration No. CIIT/SP21-PMT-010/LHR), held at 10:00 AM on Monday, June 22, 2026.

PhD Scholar: Mr. Rauf Irshad (CIIT/SP21-PMT-010/LHR)
Dissertation Title: "Extremal Characterizations of Graphs via Different Invariants"
Supervisor & Co-Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Muhammad Hussain & Dr. Maqsood Ahmad
Defense Schedule: 10:00 AM, Monday, June 22, 2026

Mr. Irshad successfully defended his doctoral dissertation entitled "Extremal Characterizations of Graphs via Different Invariants", conducted under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Muhammad Hussain and co-supervision of Dr. Maqsood Ahmad.

The research makes a significant contribution to the rapidly evolving field of Chemical Graph Theory, an interdisciplinary discipline that applies graph-theoretical concepts to model and analyse the structural properties of chemical compounds. The thesis investigates extremal characterizations of graph invariants by establishing sharp upper and lower bounds for important topological indices and identifying the corresponding extremal graph structures.

A key contribution of the research is the analytical investigation of several degree-based topological indices, including the Atom Bond Connectivity (ABC) Index, Inverse Degree Index (IDI), Zeroth-Order General Randić Index (ZOGRI), and First Hyper Zagreb Index (FHZI). The study derives exact analytical expressions for ZOGRI on F-sum graphs under the tensor product and establishes new tight bounds for FHZI in terms of graph parameters and topological invariants. These theoretical developments provide valuable mathematical tools for Quantitative Structure–Property Relationships (QSPR) and Quantitative Structure–Activity Relationships (QSAR), contributing to computational approaches in chemical informatics, molecular design, and modern pharmaceutical research.

Eminent Panel of Scholars & Examiners:
• Local External Examiners: Prof. Dr. Muhammad Akram (Dean, Faculty of Sciences, Punjab University, Lahore) and Prof. Dr. Muhammad Javaid (Associate Dean, UMT, Lahore).
• International Evaluation Panel: Prof. Dr. Juan Luis Garcia Guirao (Technical University of Cartagena, Spain) and Prof. Dr. Mustafa Turkyilmazoglu (Hacettepe University, Türkiye).

The successful completion of this defense marks another important milestone for the Department of Mathematics. With this achievement, Mr. Rauf Irshad becomes the 81st graduate to earn the PhD from the Department, reflecting its sustained commitment to high quality research, academic excellence, and the advancement of mathematical sciences. The Department extends its heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Rauf Irshad, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Hussain, Dr. Maqsood Ahmad, and wishes Dr. Rauf Irshad continued success in his future research, teaching, and professional endeavors.

International Collaboration

CIMPA School: Recent Advances in Combinatorics and its Applications

The school provided an introduction to both basic and advanced concepts in combinatorics, primarily targeting Master's level students. It assumed a reasonable general mathematical background but did not require previous specialized knowledge in the covered topics. The scientific content of the courses was tightly coordinated, offering a concrete learning experience as a foundation for further study.

The material was motivated by an overview of the field and discussions of main open problems. It mainly consisted of relatively simple cases, allowing students to learn specific proof techniques. A significant amount of time was dedicated to exercise and tutorial sessions, where students received individual attention from the lecturers. The first week of the school consisted of four introductory courses covering graph colorings and labeling, F-convexity and related problems, Cayley graphs, and the degree-diameter problem. The second week focused on more advanced topics, including tropical convexity, combinatorics, and commutative algebra, metric spaces over groups, Neumaier graphs, and signed and addressing graphs. The final course discussed new bounds for strongly regular graphs, recent progress on Neumaier graphs, and open problems in signed and addressing graphs.
