The purpose of launching PhD program at the CUI Lahore campus is to prepare students at the advanced level to investigate and resolve new challenges faced by Computer Science discipline. The PhD program at CUI provides solid theoretical foundations by offering the latest courses designed by leading experts in the field. Students are also exposed to the latest research ideas through innovative technologies and theoretical knowledge of the subject. The Department of Computer Science is committed to achieve the highest international standard and encourages students to optimize their skills and potentials to solve the contemporary problems of computer science. The CS department provides a tremendous learning and research environment through its highly qualified faculty and research groups working in the areas of Networking, Databases, Software Engineering, and Computer Vision and Graphics.

Areas of Specialization

Software Engineering

Advance software engineering, software project management, software quality assurance, knowledge based systems,and reverse engineering are the major topics.

Semantic Web

This elective exposes the students to the exciting and challenging areas of semantic web, component software, web warehousing, and web mining.

Networking

Students are exposed to areas such as network security, distributed system, advanced networks, wireless and mobile networking, cryptography, and ad-hoc networks.

Database System

Distributed-advanced-web databases, data warehousing and data mining, object-oriented databases are the main subjects in the field of database.

Multimedia and Graphics

Computer graphics, geometric modeling, data structure of computer graphics, geographical information system, digital image processing, pattern recognition, computer vision, computer animation are the major components for the PhD students who opt for this specialization.

Scope

Pakistan’s IT industry can play a major role in boosting the country’s economy like other Asian countries. Unlike other industries, the Information Technology industry does not require heavy machinery, elaborate infrastructure or sophisticated tools. It mainly depends on capable people. Pakistan’s IT and software industry has mainly focused on higher end software products and solutions and is mostly populated with bachelors and masters degree holders in the field of CS. In the past, the research and development in the industry had a very low or no priority at all. With the passage of time both academia and the industry realized the importance of research in the field of IT. In order to excel in academics, a PhD degree in the relevant field is a must. A very limited number of universities in Pakistan are offering PhD degree in CS which is far less than the demand. We aretrying to fill this gap by providing a program structure par excellence for achieving a state of the art higher degree in the field of computer science.

Objectives

The Graduate Program in Computer Science has been designed with the objectives that the students will

1. Possess a breadth of knowledge in Computer Science, combined with a depth of knowledge in at least one focus area.
2. Be capable of independent research in Computer Science.
3. Be familiar with the literature in the field and be able to perform a literature search on an advanced topic in Computer Science.
4. Be knowledgeable about the theoretical foundations of computing and have strong practical application experience.
5. Be able to make a professional presentation and be able to write a research article in the field of Computer Science.
6. Having experience working in teams and Faculty.
7. Understand and respect the professional standards of ethics expected of a computer scientist.

Careers

The skills computer science students gain during the course of PhD program enable them to do independent research in different fields. The knowledge acquired by the students during their stay at the department opens a whole new range of jobs in universities, research institutions, and in the CS and IT market in Pakistan and abroad. A strong liaison of CS with the industry and foreign universities provides an excellent opportunity to the students to understand the requirement and demand of international indusry from a computer scientist’s view point which helps them to acquire a better position in the market.

Eligibility Criteria

1. MS/M.Phil (18 years of education) or its equivalent degree in Computer Science or Information Technology from an accredited institute with minimum 70% marks (annual system) or CGPA 3.0/4.0 (semester system) with no third division or D grade throughout academic career.
2. GRE (Subject) as per HEC policy or NTS GAT (Subject) with 60% or higher marks and
3. Interview.
