5th Punjab young Physicists Tournament (PYPT)

5TH PUNJAB YOUNG PHYSICICST TOURNAMENT (5TH PYPT) AT DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS CUI LAHORE NOVEMBER 12-13,2022

 The 5th Punjab young Physicists Tournament (PYPT) was held in Department of Physics, CUI Lahore on November 12-13, 2022. Around 17 teams of under the age of 19 students from 23 different schools of the Punjab participated in the tournament. Professor Dr. Shahid Rafique (Dean Faculty of Engineering, humanities, and Islamic studies, UET Lahore) graced the opening ceremony as chief guest. Dr. Shahid Rafique, being a renowned Physicist, urged the need for such activities where students are stretched to their limit. In each fight the teams choose a problem from a given problem set, propose, and report a solution based on experiment, analytical and graphical analysis of various variables and parameters governing the phenomenon. The proposed solution is debated by the opponent teams and the merits and demerits of the problems are discussed. The activity in true letter and spirit, meant to train science students to think critically, intellectually and more research and experiment oriented, which will certainly turn out to be useful and producing more innovative scientists and researchers on the global level in the field of Physics.

The excitement of all the teams and participants was worth noticing, as the spent time in classrooms and enjoined the refreshening green fields and architecture of the Campus. The participants were entertained with tea, refreshment and lunch followed by a scrumptious dinner at campus hosted by the Department of Physics CUI Lahore which they enjoyed the most. Dr. Saleem Farooq Shaukat (Director CUI-Vihari Campus) was chief guest at the closing ceremony, while Dr. Waqas Iqbal (Head Department of Physics, Riphaah International University Lahore) was guest of honored. Dr. Saleem also commended the passionate and well-prepared participant teams and the effort of the jurors. The chief executive (PYPT) Dr. Farida Tahir thanked the COMSATS university Lahore Campus for excellent arrangements and enlightened the audience about the background of the event and the tireless efforts put forth till date to bring this international level activity to Pakistan.

Background of PYPT

The team that represented Pakistan for the first time in 29th IYPT comprised of five self-motivated students. In order to ensure Pakistan's participation in the international event we have to develop a structure which can be easily a source of good, intelligent and hardworking students from all over Pakistan. To establish a salient and permanent feature from 2017 onwards, Dr. Farida and Mr. Tahir Hussain Khan, introduced Pakistan Young Physicists Tournament (PYPT) which in fact is the preliminary round of IYPT and in it the final team to participate in corresponding IYPT is selected. In April 2017 1st PYPT took place in former about six teams and in later time 15 teams took part. In the year 2018-19 the number of teams was more than 20 and with the passage of time this number will increase.

Proposed Goals /Objectives

The aim of these competitions is to:

  1. Disseminate the importance of Physics at post primary, secondary and higher secondary levels.
  2. Introduce Physics competition among school and college students
  3. Develop the culture of research at teen age levels
  4. Make students learn how to present themselves
  5. Invoke the spirit to face people and large
  6. Produce in themselves the power to convince others
  7. Instill in them the spirit to face the criticism
  8. Familiarize the students with very complex and complicated branch of science in a very simple way.

Outcome of these Competitions

Students will benefit from a culture of competition, understanding, critical analysis, scientific criticism, and courage to face hard times. In return some great thinkers, analysts, critics, researchers, scholars, and scientists are guaranteed. At the right time and age, the indelible marks would be engraved on the canvas of tender minds.

The Salient Features of Physics Fights

  • Teamwork: The IYPT competition is one of the most important soft-skills required by young people to succeed in today's fast-paced and highly competitive world. The ability to cooperate in an organized way as well as organize one's own work is a must for success in the modern workplace.
  • Knowledge: Working with the IYPT problems teaches a lot of scientific knowledge, however, it is done quite differently than in usual science classes. Due to more project-oriented and practical work the knowledge will be retained much longer. Furthermore, one also learns how to apply the new knowledge.
  • Research: Since IYPT problems are formulated in a very open way they offer a perfect way to accommodate oneself with the methods of scientific research. Working on IYPT problems can help in finding a way to deal with completely new questions and tasks.
  • Rhetorical Skills: Rhetorical skills are one of the very important aspects of IYPT. It is important to present the prepared solutions in a convincing and impressive way. One needs to be spontaneous, to be able to react on the reports of others and to prepare a speech and a discussion within very little time.
  • Language Skills: Since the official language of the IYPT is English, it offers a great opportunity to train your English language skills.
  • International Aspect: The IYPT is an opportunity for young scholars and knowledge seekers to visit another country and have international exposure and to get to know young people from all over the world. For this the role of CIIT can involve its faculty for establishing the base for such competitions and can also host such activities (national and international) This would help CIIT win good name for Pakistan and for itself.
