The Dental Materials Group, led by Prof. Dr. Asma Tufail at the Interdisciplinary Research Center in Biomedical Materials (IRCBM), is pioneering advancements in sustainable dental and biomedical materials. Our interdisciplinary approach bridges material science, bioengineering, and clinical dentistry to develop innovative solutions that improve oral health and patient outcomes. Our group includes dental students pursuing PhDs and Master's degrees, as well as researchers from biotechnology, pharmacy, and chemistry. United by a shared vision, we aim to develop advanced, sustainable, and clinically relevant solutions that are both affordable and accessible, thereby advancing oral healthcare on both scientific and societal levels.

Research Focus

  • Advanced bioceramics and composites (fillers, injectables, and scaffolds) with antibacterial, regenerative, and remineralization properties.
  • Enhanced resin infiltrants and adhesives with improved strength and aesthetics.
  • Functionally graded bioactive membranes for GTR/GBR in periodontitis and bone regeneration.
  • Additive manufacturing (FDM, SLS, bioprinting) for custom, high-performance dental material design and fabrication.

Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in Dentistry

We are also exploring the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in dental research and practice. Our work in this area focuses on:

  • Material optimization and predictive modeling.
  • Personalized Dental Material Design.
  • Accelerating Bench-to-Clinic Development.

Bridging Research and Clinical Practice in Dental Innovation

The Dental material group works extensively with clinicians, surgeons, and industry partners—both nationally and internationally—to translate our research into clinically viable and commercially scalable solutions. These collaborations ensure that our work addresses real-world challenges in dentistry and leads to meaningful advancements in dental care. The group is further strengthened by numerous dentists who are committed to advancing their expertise through cutting-edge research in specialized areas of dentistry.

Our Vision

To lead the future of dental healthcare by integrating sustainable material innovation, digital manufacturing, and intelligent systems—delivering real-world solutions that transform patient care.
