Dr. Usman Khurshid have joined COMSATS University Islamabad, Lahore Campus as an Assistant Professor in Center of Islamic Finance in May 2022, he has completed his PhD in Islamic Finance from International Islamic University Malaysia with the thesis titled as “Evaluation of Shariah non-compliance risk in Shariah stocks screening methodologies using discriminant analysis”.
He has been involved in research activities since 2009 which is before he graduated from his under-graduate degree in Bachelors of Business administration, his first paper was published in international journal of basic and applied science in 2009 with titled Economic and financial turmoil: Special case for Pakistan in current scenario and published second paper on the monetary and fiscal policy in 2010 in the international journal of business management and economic research. He has been involved in Islamic finance applied and academic research during and after the completion of his MSc in Islamic banking and finance from IIUM Institute of Islamic Banking and Finance Malaysia. He has also consulted with different regulatory bodies such as Securities and exchange commission of Pakistan and Securities Commission Malaysia on their consultation papers regarding Shariah compliance of the stocks and the digital assets regulations respectively.
He have worked as an Associate Consultant at Amanie group of companies under Dr. Mohd Daud Bakar, the chairman of SAC (Shariah Advisory Committtee) of Bank Negara Malaysia and SC Malaysia. As an Associate Consultant, his main responsibility was to liaison between the Islamic finance industry and academia to help strategize, design and execute the Islamic Finance products including training, workshops, conferences, networking, research and advisory projects.
He not only has publications in Islamic finance but also in economics, monetary and fiscal policy, Islamic social finance, Shariah stocks screening and Shariah non-compliance risk in Islamic capital market (Shariah stocks screening). Also, he has attended numerous conferences, presented conference papers and published papers in reputed journals around the world.
He was also involved in independent research projects related to block-chain, cryptocurrencies and digital assets. The research included the overall proposal/white paper of the Kuala Lumpur based digital assets exchange along with the research design for the structure of the platform and the ICO consultancy. The research also includes the designing of the response to the SC Malaysia, a digital platform for digital assets trading licensing application and follow up on the SC Malaysia “public consultation paper on the proposed regulatory framework for the issuance of the digital assets through initial coin offering”.
More recently he was involved with the cooperative department, Government of KPK, Abbottabad office for training and development of the local company secretaries and representatives in 2020. The training was related to the financial management, planning skills and community organization, motivation and mobilization.
