Biography

Dr. Usama Ijaz Bajwa is a Tenured Professor in the Department of Computer Science at COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI), Lahore Campus. He previously served as Assistant Professor and Associate Head of Department (Aug 2017–Jan 2021), and was promoted to Tenured Associate Professor in 2019 before attaining Professorship. He currently heads the Machine Perception & Visual Intelligence Research Group (MPVIR). Dr. Bajwa completed his M.S. and Ph.D. at the Center for Advanced Studies in Engineering (CASE), Islamabad, and earned his M.Sc. in Computer Science from Hamdard University, Karachi (2001). Early in his career he worked as an Assistant System Analyst at COMSATS Information Technology Center (CITC) and lectured at COMSATS Institute of Information Technology, Abbottabad. He also spent a research visit at the Medical Imaging Lab, University of South Wales, U.K., where he worked on the Infrared Atlas of Normals for skin-temperature analysis.


In addition to his academic appointments, Dr. Bajwa has substantial industry leadership experience. Most recently he served as Head of Product and Engineering Manager (Machine Learning) at Persivia / Soliton, where he led cross-functional product and ML teams to deliver AI-enabled healthcare products. His responsibilities included defining and evangelizing product vision and rolling roadmaps, running day-to-day delivery across Product, Development and QA, instituting productivity and governance metrics, and centralizing product knowledge and documentation. In his ML leadership role he guided end-to-end delivery of production ML systems, from research and prototyping to deployment, covering clinical data extraction, patient-level insights chatbots, high-throughput query engines and chatbot-driven query interfaces, automated testing frameworks, and remote patient-monitoring agents. He also championed engineering best practices (code reviews, automated testing, model health checks) and process improvements that reduced rework and technical debt while accelerating innovation.


Usama's last assignments at CIIT Abbottabad included: Graduate Program Coordinator, Program Chair International Conference on Frontiers of Information Technology (FIT) from 2014-till 2024, Head Information Security and Image Processing Research Group, along with teaching courses and supervising graduate and under graduate thesis. Before that he served as a Team Lead in an ICT R&D funded project "Automatic Personal Identification Biometric Systems for Large Scale Application" (APIBS). Since January 2008, he has been associated with the Vision and Pattern Recognition Systems (VisPRS) Research Group. The group has successfully completed two R&D projects funded by Ministry of IT and Telecom, Pakistan, related to Biometrics and Video Encoding. During this time he also co-founded a company, Technology Nucleus (Pvt) Ltd and currently serves as Director of the Artificial Intelligence Education Foundation (AIEF), where he advances AI education, industry–academia partnerships, and capacity building initiatives.


His main research interests remain biometrics, medical image analysis, and video analytics, complemented by applied work on ML systems, clinical extraction pipelines, and productized AI solutions for healthcare.
