The focal objective of my research is the synthesis of polymers, nano-ceramics and their composites for biomedical/dental applications, structural evaluation of natural tissues (from biological and chemical perspectives) and biomaterials for dental application. This includes basic research into the identification and understanding of the fundamental mechanisms by which chemical responses are mediated by nano- to micro-scale variations in polymer chemistry and structure.

I have been working on non-destructive methods (FTIR and Raman Spectroscopy) of characterisation of biomaterials and natural tissues. This in particular is an exciting avenue, which I seek to develop further, especially the identification of tissue types, cell genotyping for in-situ monitoring. I very much see this as an area that is ripe for exploitation in the future given the required investment in resources. My research is driven by a number of different approaches, namely;

1.       Synthesis and Fabrication of Composites based on Natural Polymers and Nano-apatites

2.       Tissue Engineering scaffolds via Electrospinning

3.       Characterisation of natural and cancerous tissues

4.       Optimising the surface chemistry of the materials

5.       Grafting the ceramic structures in to the backbone of polymeric chain to develop novel dental material

6.       Nano-capsulation
