Dr Anila Asif has strong background in polymer chemistry and physics and her research interests span a wide range with a focus on the processing-structure-properties relation in polymers  (hyperbranched/ dendrimers), composites and bioceramics.

In terms of techniques, she has particular expertise in the use of FTIR spectrophotometer, Photo-DSC, UV curing, TGA, DSC, DMA, GPC, VPO and UV-Vis spectrophotometer.

Her research group at IRCBM focuses on synthesis of porous bioceramic, polymer /ceramic composite materials. Major ongoing projects in her group are listed below.

Macroporous bioceramic monoliths for hard tissue replacement; synthesis, characterization and in vitro analysis:

Calcium phosphates bioceramics, especially hydroxyapatite (HA) and β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP), are excellent candidates for bone repair and regeneration. Two main forms of HA, dense and porous play an eminent role for bone regeneration. However porous HA provides more directed in-growth of bone cells. So aim of this project is to synthesize porous bioceramics with pore morphology in consistent with pore characteristics of natural bone. Moreover biological evaluation of synthesized porous ceramic will ensure its use as a clinically safe bone substitute.

Synthesis and characterization of novel composite materials:

Hydroxyapatite has been widely used as an auspicious bone graft due to its similarity with inorganic constituent of human bone, excellent biocompatibility and osteoconductivity. But poor mechanical strength of Hydroxyapatite restricts its application to non loaded areas. So its composites with different polymers are commonly employed for load bearing applications. She has particular interest in developing methods of synthesizing materials and processes in situ, experiments focusing on synthesis composite of Hydroxyapatite with Poly vinyl alcohol to get mechanically improved bone substitute are in progress. Synthesis of bone replacement materials with good biological and mechanical properties will make possible their short hand availability in Pakistan and will definitely help to improve the quality of life. 

Synthesis of bioceramic 3D scaffolds for guided bone generation:

A key component for successful bone regeneration is the scaffold that serves as a template for cell interactions and the formation of bone-extracellular matrix to provide structural support to the newly formed tissue. Recently she has been at the forefront of research into the development of novel bioceramic scaffolds. Ultimate aim is to get scaffolds with mechanical properties similar to those of the bone repair site, good biocompatibility and biodegradability at a rate commensurate with remodeling.
